THE PURCHASE
10.4.21

Sunday Mike 2/21

Yesterday was a catch up day. We ran a few errands and tried to just ignore that fact that we have a major water leak. Nobody seemed to be worried about it, why should the Smarties. Luckily, Mike figured out by shutting the main valve outside off, he could keep the kitchen & upstairs bathroom working. Our bathroom downstairs is a no go. Well, we can Laura & Pa Ingles it and dump water into the tank for a quick flush. Perfect for scaredy cat Kerri, in the middle of the night. I will not go upstairs alone. So 1 of 2 bathrooms working, kitchen sink working, no laundry as the wash is in our bathroom. Overall not bad right? …. just wait it’s only Saturday.

Our very nice neighbor Luca stopped over to bring us a bottle of Olive Oil. He said in very good English- “it’s the best around this region”. Lucca, just so happens to be my absolute favorite town in Tuscany. My girls will love this. They have told me to stop talking about Lucca. I can’t wait to tell them I met our new neighbor, LUCCA. Shortly after he stopped over, 2 other neighbors stopped over to say if we needed anything, they’re just behind us ~ Giovanni & Alessandra. Later that evening we met the neighbors in the apartment above us, beside the 2nd & 3rd floor of our home. Kat & I didn’t catch the husbands name. To be completely honest, they did not come across as so friendly as the other neighbors we met. Who cares 2/3 ”ain’t bad”. We’re feeling even if we just purchased the money pit, at least we have great neighbors! Perspective. It’s all about perspective.
Sunday…. the Lord‘s Day. When can Mike crank the saw to start putting up my shelves in the kitchen? We have no idea, but we got up late. We’re still exhausted from running everywhere and the hectic week. I decided to venture upstairs to shower. What could go wrong. Well, if you’re a fan of the Mama Mia movies… in the 2nd one when Donna (Meryl Streep) sees the gushing water 💦 and they all yell “Aphrodite”…. apparently the shower drain upstairs was clogged and leaked through the kitchen ceiling down to Mike … who is cutting the wood shelving. What the actual F. Insert a few choice words. In English, not Italian. We haven’t learned those yet. Who knew praying for water earlier in the week would lead to this. Nothing a mop & rug can’t wipe up. Breathe Kerri. It’s just water coming from your kitchen ceiling. Relax…. “It’s ok“ in my handy man Italian voice. See photos.

So, we head up Via Regina Elena to go to 1 of 3 local stores for draino. Nope not today. It’s Sunday they’re closed. Joke is on us. No shower for Smartie today! But, on our way back we walked down some alleys and streets we didn’t even know existed. Wait until I upload the photos. It’s beyond beautiful. We’re still feeling blessed. Despite the problems with electric & plumbing … you know those main things, everything else is good. Actually the electric is just what it is. Brett’s bf Chris (his dad Rich is a plumber) he would be grabbing a rum & coke for this job!! My most recent job in Massachusetts was a billing clerk for Bill, Mr. Plumbrite, a master plumber. Bill will love this story! A high school friend, Luana who lives here in Italy has an updated system and apparently still blows fuses. So it is what is is girlfriend. The water situation should be dealt with tomorrow we pray. The house is plenty large enough for us, our 4 grown kids, their significant others (when the time comes) and family & friends. I’m loving the character and charm and authenticity of it. The village has what we need, a local Conad grocery store (very similar to Aldi) and a small cafe for cappuccino all within walking distance. We have a bus stop right here, we just have to figure it out. So we don’t sing that song while on it… “the wheels on the bus go round & round.”

Here’s some before & after photos so far. Let me tell you all, Chip & Joanna (and their million dollar budget) have absolutely nothing on our no euro budget. Enjoy the simple things in life ~ sunshine, views, history, charm, character…. and running water…even if it’s coming from your kitchen ceiling.
Ciao.
